General info
South Sudan, officially called the
Republic of South Sudan, is the world's newest country. It is a landlocked
country located on the continent of Africa to the south of the country of Sudan.
South Sudan became an independent nation at midnight on July 9, 2011. The
capital of South Sudan is Juba, situated in the south of the country.
Doro where we will be based is in the Upper Nile state in the north east
of the country near the Ethiopian border.
Recent History
Sudan endured decades of civil war causing massive economic and social
problems in the South which resulted in a lack of infrastructure, human rights
issues and the displacement of a large part of its population. During the civil
war it is estimated 2 million people died, and 5 million were displaced.
In 2005 a cease fire was agreed and in 2011 South Sudan gained independence.
In the year since independence, many people have been repatriated back to South
Sudan. There have been disagreements over the new border between Sudan and
South Sudan with violence causing refugees to head south.
Climate
Since South Sudan is located near the Equator in the tropics, much of
its landscape is tropical forest. South Sudan also has extensive
swamp and grassland regions. The White Nile, a main tributary of the Nile
River, also passes through the country. Temperatures can be between 20-30
April- October and 30-40 degrees December- March. Most rainfall in South
Sudan is between the months of April and October, and there is practically no
rain the rest of the year.
Language
The official language of South Sudan is English, however this will only be spoken by those who have attended school. The trade language still tends to be Sudanese Arabic
in much of the country. And there are scores of tribal languages. The tribal group
in Doro is the Mabaan people.
